BOCA RATON, Fla. – After wrapping up the fall preseason and heading towards spring, the Florida Atlantic University baseball team voted internally for three captains for this season, in Gunnar Lambert, Pedro Pages and Blake Sanderson.
Â
"I think the players' choices for captains was a very good one," said Head Coach John McCormack. "I have the utmost faith in Gunnar, Blake, and Pedro to help myself and the players run the program. They have the respect of their peers and I will lean on them throughout the year."
Â
The three upperclassmen are embarking on a combined 13 years of experience within the program. Sanderson is a fifth-year redshirt senior pitcher, who is expected to join the rotation after serving in a variety of pitching roles prior to this, his final year. Lambert, who like Sanderson has already earned his undergraduate degree and will be a redshirt senior as well, has also been with the team for five years. He spent most of last season at first base but also spelled Pages at catcher late in the year. Pages is a true junior with two years behind the plate under his belt, and broke through offensively last year as a sophomore.
Â
"I think this group of guys is the most mature group I've been around in my five years here," said Sanderson. "I think it just preaches how we do everything right. I expect that we'll have a good season because everyone is on the same page, and we're all trying to achieve the same thing."
Â
"It's awesome," said Lambert of being voted captain. "I've been here for a long time, and been through multiple captains, and you take a little bit from each one of them, and make your own way of leading. It's awesome that the team saw us as examples and want to follow us to hopefully another championship."
Â
"I am honored that my teammates voted me as a captain this season, and see me as someone that can lead us to success on and off the field," said Pages, before concluding with 'Eat n Play' and the hashtag #yooo.
Â
The trio will lead the team when the players return following winter break. Practice is scheduled to start back on Jan. 25, 2019, and Opening Night, versus the Cincinnati Bearcats, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, at FAU Baseball Stadium.
