Women's Basketball's Rally Comes Up Short

BOCA RATON, Fla. – After falling behind by 15 in the second quarter, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team (3-7) rallied to within one point heading into the final quarter against Western Michigan (4-4) on Sunday afternoon at FAU Arena. The Broncos responded by outscoring the Owls, 24-15, in the fourth to claim a 69-59 win.

The Owls hit the road to take on No. 23 Michigan in East Lansing on Thursday, Dec. 20. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. It will be the fourth road game out of the Owls' last five contests.

HOW IT WAS DECIDED
- The Owls got on the scoreboard first on a layup from Ra'Kyra Gabriel 1:29 into the game and FAU started the game up 6-2. The Broncos came back to tie things up and then take a lead. Juliette Gauthier connected on a corner three to tie the game again, but Western Michigan ended the quarter outscoring the Owls, 12-2, to take a 21-11 lead.
- The Broncos stayed ahead by double digits in the second quarter until Glenisha Harkless cut it to nine with a three from the top of the key. The Owls outscored Western Michigan, 14-13, in the period.
- In the third quarter, FAU continued to try and chip away at the lead Western Michigan built. The Owls opened the period making their first five shots, but weren't able to make a run. Gabriel made two free throws with 36 seconds left to cut it to three. Danneal Ford made a buzzer-beating jumper to make it a one-point game heading into the final quarter.
- The first two minutes of the fourth quarter were competitive, but the Broncos were able to extend their lead to nine with 6:43 and stayed ahead for the remainder of the game.
GAME NOTES
- Gauthier led the Owls with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists
- Amber Gaston flirted with a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The 10 boards were a career high for the freshman. Her nine points came on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. She also had two steals
- Abby Voss was also on the verge of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. She added one block
- In only the 10th game of their collegiate careers, the FAU freshmen scored 64.4 percent of the Owls' points and pulled down 63.8 percent of FAU's rebounds
- The Owls outrebounded Western Michigan, 47-37. It was the second straight game FAU has outrebounded its opponent
