Key Plays
The Owls held an 8-6 lead early in the first frame, then had a modest run to stretch the margin to 12-7. FAU was able to maintain a slim, but steady lead the rest of the way to take the set 25-21. FAU led 20-14 in set number two and seemed poised to take a 2-0 lead, but the Mean Green (6-14, 2-2) reeled off an 11-1 run to level the sides at one set each. It was North Texas' turn to build a lead in set three, holding a 16-11 cushion. After a timeout, the Owls responded and were eventually able to take a 19-18 lead. North Texas tied the score with a kill, then FAU answered right back with kills by Massiel Matos and Abbi Reid to go back up 21-19. The two teams alternated points the rest of the way and Matos' seventh kill of the frame gave FAU a 2-1 edge. North Texas began the fourth set intent on forcing a fifth set and took another early edge, this time going up 13-7. However, the Owls answered the challenge by rebounding to take the lead 15-14, the final two points coming on back-to-back Sigourney Kame kills. An exchange of small runs ended with the Mean Green holding a 21-18 lead. FAU scored six unanswered points, going up 24-21. NT not only fought off three straight match points, but won the next point as well, taking a 25-24 edge. FAU won the next two points and ended up with two more match points, coming up empty on both opportunities. With the score tied 27-27, Kame and Matos each put down a kill ending the match and giving FAU the win.
