BOCA RATON, Fla. – With a 1-0 Senior Day win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team remained unbeaten in Conference USA play (6-0-1) to stay atop the league standings, ran their current streak without a loss to eight matches, and including last year, now are 9-0-1 in their last 10 C-USA matches. Their last in-conference loss came over a calendar year ago, on Oct. 13, 2017.
The Turning Point:
After being turned away from many tremendous attempts, including a sprawling save off an Elisha Holmes rocket, and an Ebba Blomqvist header off the crossbar, FAU (9-6-1, 6-0-1 C-USA) broke through, literally, in the 39th minute. Carolynn Wotring sent a deep pass up the spine, and Sammy Vitols broke past the back line and beat the oncoming MT (9-4-1, 4-2-1 C-USA) keeper to the right to open the scoring.
The Finish:
The Owls outshot the Blue Raiders 11-3 in the first half, and 7-4 after the break as well. They dominated the end line, earning 15 corners (nine after the break) to just two for the visitors. Jennifer Ocampo, one of the Owls' six seniors celebrated prior to the match, got her sixth shutout of the season, saving four Blue Raiders attempts in the second half and six total in the match.
Notables:
In addition to the wins and lack of losses in this hot streak, FAU has outscored conference opponents 9-2 overall this season, and 5-0 at home in five matches
Adding in the three results to wrap last year, that goal differential becomes 14-2 against C-USA foes in the last 10 matches
For Vitols, she earned goal No. 2 of the season; Wotring recorded her first ever collegiate assist
On a hot and humid South Florida Sunday (that included two mandatory water break stoppages), six Owls again posted the full 90 on the field: Ocampo, Wotring, Ebba Blomqvist, Hailey Landrus, Alex Maxson and Jessica Monteiro
Quotable:
"I thought we were really, really good throughout the first half, (we) deserved a goal and got a goal," said Head Coach Patrick Baker. "A great through ball found Sammy Vitols in 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, and (she) showed great composure to finish … Again, we bent, we didn't break, happy for our seniors and happy for our team to move to 6-0-1."
