BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team will travel to El Paso to take on UTEP for the second time in 10 days.
GAME NOTABLES
Thursday's game will be the second meeting between FAU (8-6, 2-1 C-USA) and UTEP (11-6, 2-2 C-USA) this season. On January 7, UTEP traveled to Boca Raton during the first week of conference play. The Owls came away with a 72-66 victory. It will be the eighth meeting all-time between the two teams. The Owls will be looking to even up the series that UTEP currently leads, 4-3. The Owls have won six of their last eight games and have started conference play 2-1.
FAU comes into the game as the conference leader in rebounds per game with an average of 45.1, which is the ninth highest mark in the nation. They are also second in the conference in defensive boards, averaging 30 per game, ninth highest in the country. FAU is the only team in Conference USA with three players in the top 17in the league in rebounds per game with Sasha Cedeño (8.8 rpg), Ra'Kyra Gabriel (7.5 rpg) and Raven Doyle (6.5 rpg).
The Owls are averaging 70.8 points per game, which is third in C-USA and the highest for an FAU team since the 2013-14 season. Cedeño leads the team in scoring and is the second leading scorer in the league, averaging 18.4 points per game.
FAU features two players who have been dishing out dimes this season. Danneal Ford has maintained an average of 4.3 assists per game, fourth highest in Conference USA and Malia Kency has an average of 3.8 per game, sixth highest in the league. FAU is the only team in the league with two players in the top six in that category.
LAST TIME OUT
FAU suffered its first loss in conference play last week to Rice. The loss skidded a four-game winning streak that the Owls had going into the game. The Owls kept things close for the first half but a third quarter where Rice outscored FAU, 29-11, was too much to overcome. Sasha Cedeño and Danneal Ford each had 12 points in the contest, while Tyana Robinson added 11.
SCOUTING UTEP
UTEP will be capping off a three-game homestand with FAU on Thursday night. The Miners hosted Charlotte and Middle Tennessee last week. The Miners had a split weekend with a 67-58 victory against Charlotte but a 54-45 loss to Middle Tennessee.
In its most recent game, UTEP was done in by the hot shooting hand of freshman Anna Jones of Middle Tennessee who poured in 30 points in the contest. The Blue Raiders were able to double down on the Miners' leading duo of Tamara Seda and Najala Howell, holding them to a combined six points.
UTEP has a +8.4 margin on the boards, which leads the conference and they bring down an average of 40.5 rebounds per game. Tamara Seda has secured eight double-doubles this season, the second most in Conference USA.
