FORT MYERS, Fla. - (September 1, 2017) - The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team dropped a pair of tough matches on Friday, losing to UCF in four sets (25-21, 24-26, 25-11, 25-20) in its first match of the day before falling to Miami in five sets (25-15, 25-27, 31-29, 23-25, 15-11) as part of the FGCU Homewood Suites Classic.
Match 1 vs. UCF

The first set had 10 ties, the final one coming at 15-15 before the Knights used a 5-2 run to close out the frame and take a 1-0 lead. Set number two was tight down the stretch with UCF and FAU tying at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22 and 24-24. At that point, UCF committed back-to-back attack errors to even the match at one set apiece. UCF roared out to a big lead early in the third set and never looked back, winning 25-11 to retake the lead. FAU was behind by as many as six points in set number three, but cut the lead in half late in the frame. UCF was able to fend off the rally and took the set 25-20 to clinch the match.

Match 2 vs. Miami

The Owls and Hurricanes were tied at 14 in set number one when Miami reeled off seven straight points on its way to a 25-15 win. FAU (3-2) built a 13-7 lead in the second set, but UM wouldn't go away and eventually fought back to even the score at 25 all, but the Owls took the next two points to tie the match. Set three was close the entire way, with neither side managing a lead larger than three points. The 19th and final lead change of the frame came at 29 when Olga Strantzali tallied two straight kills to put the Hurricanes up 2-1. The fourth set was a carbon copy of the third, with neither side able to maintain momentum. A Kristi Tekavec kill gave the Owls a 23-22 lead. After a Hurricane kill tied the scored again, Abbi Reid put down a kill before teaming with Tekavec for the match tying point, forcing a decisive fifth set. In that fifth set, UM held a 10-6 lead. FAU pulled with two at 12-10, but couldn't get any closer, falling 15-10.
