Cross Country Successful at Home Meet to Commence Campaign

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country squads had successful showings at the annual FAU Cross Country Invitational, with the women finishing first, the men fourth, and seven combined runners crossing the line in 13th or better on Friday night.
Men's Notables:
- Lachlan Shiver was the top Owl at 16:16 and in 10th place, and just behind him was Jonathan Werble (12th in 16:23)
- Both of those marks were personal records, and top 10 all-time in men's history (Shiver is now in fifth place, and Werble is seventh)
- John Marting placed 20th overall, crossing in 16:49, also good enough for a PR
- In his first collegiate meet, freshman Sean Barone placed 22nd (17:00), with another first-year, Cristian Moreno, slotting 26th (17:31)
- The Owls outpaced conference rival FIU by over 40 points to take fourth
- Nathan Kuck of Miami took first place overall among men's individuals, in a time of 15:18
Women's Notables:
- The Owls put five runners between eighth and 13th for their 51 counting points to top Miami (56), UCF (67) and Stetson (70), among others
- Taking first for the squad was Liz Wellman in 19:14 for eighth place
- Next was Christina Schultz, ninth in 19:16, then Bethany Hardcastle, 10th at 19:19
- Mikaela Jonsson (11th, 19:24) and Erica Lersch (13th, 19:25, a PR) wrapped the point total, but contributing top times as well were Sophia Clark (17th, 19:40, also a PR) and freshman Megan Giovanniello (20th, 20:00)
- The top female collegian Friday was also from Miami, Maryam Jiwad, in 18:07

"Tonight we were very pleased with the performance of both squads," said Head Coach Alex Smolka. "The men's team result doesn't quite translates to how well we ran; all of our returners ran faster this year than last year on our home course and we are very pleased with the performance of our newcomers. The future looks bright for our young men's team. On the women's side, we are extremely happy with the way we defended our home turf against tough competition and how closely packed up our top five runners were. An 11-second gap between our No. 1 and No. 5 runner is a school record and bodes extremely well for the rest of the season. A cross country team is only as strong as its weakest link, and with us having the top five so closely bunched together, good things will continue to happen."
What's Next:
The women only head to Miami for the UM Invitational, next Friday, Sept. 8, beginning at 8 a.m. The men won't compete again until Sept. 23, joining the women that morning in Gainesville for the UF Mountain Dew Invitational, a 7:30 a.m. start.
