Baseball Has Comeback Thwarted by Southern Miss in the 11th

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - For the second straight day, late inning fireworks brought the Florida Atlantic University baseball team back from the brink, but unfortunately, three Southern Miss runs in the bottom of the 11th pushed the Golden Eagles to a 5-4 Sunday win at Pete Taylor Park.
The Turning Point
Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, Jared Shouppe and David Miranda each hit solo home runs to tie the game for the Owls (29-16-1, 15-9 Conference USA). They would then take a two-run edge in the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Kerr and a Jordan Poore RBI double.
The Finish
With just one on and two outs in the bottom half of the 11th, USM (37-12, 19-5 C-USA) put together yet another improbable game-winning rally. A four-pitch walk preceded an RBI double by LeeMarcus Boyd to make it 4-3, and the game ended on a two-run single by Dylan Burdeaux.
Notables
- Heading into the ninth, Poore had the Owls' only two hits, and his double in the 11th made for a 3-for-4 day
- Shouppe led off the 11th with a double of his own and had his second straight game with two hits and two runs scored
- Also, just as they did Saturday, Drew Peden and Weston Clemente starred out of the Owls' bullpen. Peden inherited a two-on, two-out situation in the sixth, but got a strikeout to end the frame
- He would go 2 1/3 innings in total, giving up just two hits and one run with two strikeouts
- Clemente allowed only one hit in the ninth and 10th, and picked off that baserunner to face the minimum of six batters
- Starter Jake Miednik pitched into the sixth, giving up four hits and one run while striking out four
Quotable
"Another tough loss; we scratched and clawed our way back, but we have to be able to close it out," said Head Coach John McCormack. "Credit to them, they didn't give up either."
What's Next
The Owls' final road trip of the regular season takes place next weekend in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It'll be FAU at WKU for three games beginning on Friday night.
