BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team opened up the season on the right foot with a 16-5 rout of Monmouth on Friday's Opening Night at FAU Baseball Stadium.
The Turning Point
After starting pitcher Alex House set down all three of his Monmouth foes looking on strikes in the top of the first, the Owls' (1-0) batters pushed three runs across in their turn to the plate. Leadoff hitter Tyler Frank smashed a single into rightfield, and after Jared Shouppe was hit by a pitch, Frank came around on the first of four Hawk errors on the night. Stephen Kerr knocked in the second run on a safety squeeze, and the feel-good moment of the night was a two-out RBI single by Kevin Abraham in his return after a year off.
The Finish
The Owls tacked on multiple runs in four more innings, consecutive innings to be exact, in the fourth through the seventh, to push ahead (and eventually win) by double digits. Frank had a double in the fourth that scored both Abraham (who also had doubled) and Eric Rivera; Austin Langham had a two-run home run deep to leftfield in the fifth; and Esteban Puerta, to cap off a five-RBI night, had a three-run bomb to left-center in the seventh.
Notables
Quotable
"I'm happy for the guys, the really good thing about it is we had some young guys get to play, and we had some guys that hadn't been pitching...get in the game," said Head Coach John McCormack. "It's nice that we were able to do that, get everybody in uniform in the game, but it was a good night. I thought Alex House set the tone for us and did a fabulous job."
What's Next
The Owls and Hawks go right back at it again on Saturday evening for a 4 p.m. first pitch. Jake Miednik will be the game two starter for FAU.
