BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - (Jan. 13, 2017) - The Florida Atlantic University track and field team finished up the first day of the 2017 season with multiple top-10 showings at the Blazer Invite hosted by UAB.
Notables:
- The Owls' 4x400 meter relay was fifth in a field of 16 teams, as Berneta Boldin, Sherline Valentin, Anne-Catherine Wasser and Sitia Martinez crossed at 3:54.55
- Liz Wellman ran the 1-mile in 5:08.64 for fifth place. She was just a second behind the runner-up, who crossed the finish line in 5:07.55
- Also in the mile, freshman Mikaela Jonsson came in 10th place in her debut meet (5:16.11)
- Frida Thorsås earned a seventh-place showing in the 600 meter run, finishing in 1:36.42, while fellow distance runner Carydaliz Fontanez was eighth in the 1,000 meters (3:08.00)
- Continuing the long-run success and all setting personal bests in the process were Christina Schultz, seventh in the 3,000 meters (10:42.13) and three runners in the top 10 in the 5,000: Sophia Clark (sixth, 19:18.70), Johanna Freeman (eighth, 19:37.53) and Emily Ludwig (ninth, 19:39.63)
- Crystal McDougle finished just outside of the qualifiers in 12th in the 60 meter hurdles, but she set a new PR of 8.79 in the preliminaries, good enough for the No. 6 mark in program history
- Similarly, Thorsås cleared 1.59 meters in the high jump to tie for 12th, but in the process, leapt to No. 3 all-time in the record books

The team will stay put in Birmingham and compete yet again at UAB's Crossplex Arena for the Vulcan Invite on Saturday.
