GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country squads each placed sixth at the Mountain Dew Gator Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning. The men's finish came out of the 10 Divison I teams competing, with the women placing sixth out of 13 squads.
Men's Notables:
- Hitting the line first was Jonathan Werble, completing the 8K in 27:41 to place 32nd
- Next up was Conor Fitzgerald, just a handful of slots behind Werble in 37th at 27:49
- Lachlan Shiver and John Marting were neck-and-neck, finishing at 28:20 and 28:23, respectively
Women's Notables:
- Chloe Sell was the top finisher on either side Saturday, coming in 28th with a 5K time of 19:06
- Three Owls were within 10 places of Sell and in the upper third of the 121 competing DI runners: Christina Schultz (32nd at 19:16), Liz Wellman (34th at 19:20) and Bethany Hardcastle (36th at 19:23)
- Meagan Giddens also came in well under 20 minutes with a time of 19:52
Quotable:
"Both squads had some nice performances today," said Head Coach Alex Smolka. "We are happy with the results, but not satisfied yet. We met our short-term goal of beating a number of teams we were trying to beat, at the same time, we still have some unfinished business for the remainder of the season. The highlight on the men's side was the strong return of Jonathan Werble after his injury. On the women's side, the 17-second gap between our No. 1 and No. 4 is definitely something we can build on."
What's Next:
The FAU women's runners only are right back on the course this upcoming Friday. They head to Titusville, Florida, for the FLRunners.com Invitational at 5 p.m. The next race for the men is Oct. 7 at the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee.
