Sept. 13, 2016 WILMINTON, N.C. - The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team saw its first action of 2016-17 at UNC Wilmington's Seahawk Fall Invitational over the weekend with junior Remi Chancerel and senior Felipe Frias guiding the squad.
"This weekend was definitely a good test for us to see where we stand," FAU Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez said. "There is definitely a lot of room for improvement, especially in our doubles. We need to continue to work on the little details to make our doubles better. We are taking steps in the right direction to build up for our season."
Highlights:
- Chancerel made his way to the finals of the Flight A singles with wins over UNCW's Torres 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 and KSU's Pritchard 3-6, 6-4, 5-1 (ret.).
- Anthony Schohn also performed well in Flight A, winning his first match in straight sets and coming from behind to take his second match to enter the semifinals.
- Freshman Gabriel Carvajal got his first taste of collegiate tennis also in Flight A, winning his first match before working his way through the consolation bracket.
- Frias did not lose a set over his first two matches to earn a spot in the finals of the Flight B Singles and dropped just five games over those wins.
- Ignacio Jimenez won each of his first two matches in straight sets to advance to the Flight B semifinals.
- Chancerel and Trey Nickerson paired up to win the consolation bracket of the Flight A doubles by matches of 6-4 and 7-5
- Frias and Christian Haushammer marched their way through the Flight B doubles consolation bracket, sweeping their first match 6-0 and the second 6-1.
