CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- A double by Brett Lashley for the game-winning RBI and a dominant pitching performance by Devon Carr led the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to an 8-4 victory over Stetson to keep the Owls alive in the NCAA Regional.
Carr earned the victory with three shutout innings, dealing three strikeouts with just one hit allowed. At the plate, senior Billy Endris led FAU with three hits while Christian Dicks doubled twice and Lashley, Stephen Kerr and Tyler Frank each drove in a pair.
"It is great to continue to be here and win," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "I thought the guys were very resilient, went up 2-0. [After that, we] went out there, didn't have the greatest inning, down 3-2, battled back. We talk about senior moments; this guy here [Devon Carr] gave us three unbelievable innings and can't say enough about Mr. [Brett] Lashley with that big double off a very good closer. We got our seniors to really step up today."
The Owls (39-18) tallied hits in each of the first three innings, but were unable to produce runs.
A lead-off double by Dicks sparked a fourth-inning rally as he came in to score on a double by Gunnar Lambert. With two outs, Kerr laced a single to right center to double the lead to 2-0.
Stetson stormed back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on four hits to wipe away the FAU lead and go up 3-2. The Hatters would extend the lead to 4-2 with a lone run in the fifth before senior Robbie Coursel entered to pitch and stranded three Stetson runners.
Kerr led off the seventh with a walk and stole second before moving to third on a groundout. Junior CJ Chatham then plated Kerr with a sacrifice fly to cut the advantage back to one at 4-3 Stetson.
Austin Langham led off with a single in the top of the eighth and Frank walked to put two on with two outs. Lashley sent the first pitch of his at-bat scorching down the left field line to drive in two as Frank slid under the Stetson tag to give the Owls a 5-4 lead. Kerr came up big again with a line-drive single to drive in Lashley for an insurance run.
After Carr forced Stetson to leave the tying run on in the bottom of the eighth, Frank launched his first career homer in the ninth to put the contest away with a four-run lead.
Cameron Ragsdale came in to dealt the ninth, allowing just one hit as FAU eliminated Stetson.
The Owls will take on Long Beach State in an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. Brandon Rhodes will start for FAU while Tanner Brown gets the call for the Dirtbags. The winner of that matchup will take on Miami at 7 p.m. Free radio is available on FAUSports.com.
