HOUSTON, Texas â€" All nine Florida Atlantic University batters hit safely as the No. 16 Owls dominated No. 13 Rice 10-3 in a two-day contest halted by weather.
Juniors CJ Chatham and Stephen Kerr, along with senior Christian Dicks, tallied three hits apiece with Chatham driving in a game-high three runs. Kerr and Dicks each scored twice, as did Esteban Puerta as FAU posted the most hits allowed by Rice this year with 16.
Senior Brandon Rhodes dealt four innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits and struck out two before play was halted on Saturday. Alex House took over Sunday morning, pitching 2.2 innings with two earned runs on three hits before senior Devon Carr closed out the contest with 2.1 shutout innings with just one hit and two strikeouts to earn the save.
On the other side, Rice starter Blake Fox was tagged with the loss in his shortest outing of the year, allowing three earned runs on six hits over 3.1 frames.
Kerr led off the game with a single, stole second and worked his way to third before scoring on an RBI groundout by Chatham in the first.
A lead-off double and an error in the second allowed Rice to tie the contest at 1-1.
Puerta led off the fourth with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Dicks before Austin Langham hit a sacrifice fly to put FAU on top once more. Freshman Tyler Frank then belted a double off the wall in left field to plate Dicks before Fox was lifted.
After play resumed Sunday morning, back-to-back walks by Langham and Frank to lead off the sixth set Kerr up for an infield RBI single to push the FAU lead to 3-1.
Chatham crushed a one-out, solo homer in the seventh to spark a three-run rally for FAU. Puerta and Dicks singled before Langham walked to load the bags. Frank picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice before Brett Lashley hit an RBI single to the pitcher to give FAU a 6-1 advantage.
After Rice responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, FAU sealed the win with another big inning in the ninth. Frank walked before Gunnar Lambert and Kerr hit back-to-back singles to plate the freshman. Billy Endris then roped a single to center to drive in Lambert and Chatham doubled down the left-field line to drive in Kerr, ending the scoring at 10-1.
The third game of the series saw a 4-4 tie midway through the fifth inning before severe weather forced the cancelation of the contest.
FAU returns home to host WKU in the final regular-season series starting Thursday, May 19 at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
