Softball Run Rules Drake, 8-0 in Five
3/6/2016 12:00:00 AM | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Owls closed out the UNLV Invite with an 8-0 five-inning victory against Drake University, on Sunday. Florida Atlantic was 4-1 in the tournament, with its lone loss coming at the hands of No. 7 Oregon, Saturday night. FAU's record stands at 17-2 on the year.
Game Notables
- Junior pitcher Kylee Hanson moved to 8-1 on the year with the five inning shutout, her fourth of the season. Hanson struck out eight Drake batters.
- Melissa Martinez and Alex Miller were 2-for-3 each. Martinez had a double and Miller drove a run in.
- Emily Lochten hit her fourth homer in five games and was 1-for-1 on the day with two RBI.
- Left fielder Sarah Bencivenga was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game Changer
FAU opened the game with a purpose following last night's game that ended with a loss in the bottom of the seventh. In the top of the first versus Drake on Sunday, Carnesha Thompson drew a two-out walk. Emily Lochten used her only opportunity of the day to send one deep over the center field wall to score two. The sophomore shortstop was intentionally walked in her second at bat and hit by a pitch in her third. The two-run homer was all the cushion starting pitcher Kylee Hanson would need as she recorded seven of the first nine outs as strikeouts. FAU would add two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth for the 8-0 final.
Coaches Quote
"The coaches came out with the intent that the team knew we had a purpose," said Joan Joyce, FAU's head softball coach. "We didn't want them thinking about last night's game. We need to think of every single individual game as we move along. And, probably the one thing that we learned last night is that we can compete with the top teams in the country and they (FAU players) should know that. We had to make sure we took care of business today. If we weren't prepared for Drake, what we did last night would mean nothing. We have to compete in every game to show we can compete with the top teams."
