No. 16 Owls Down Rutgers; Win Seventh Straight Series

BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" An RBI single by sophomore Gunnar Lambert in the eighth inning led the No. 16 Florida Atlantic University baseball team to its seventh-consecutive series win with a 3-2 victory over Rutgers on Sunday.
The Owls (13-2) have matched 2015's 13-2 start and will open Conference USA play next weekend at Middle Tennessee.
"I thought Rutgers pitched exceptionally well for the weekend," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "But we made adjustments. I thought our guys grinded out a series victory and now we have a week off."
Stephen Kerr and Sean Labsan each tallied a pair of hits as FAU recorded nine hits for the 13th time this season. Devon Carr earned the win, dealing one inning of perfect work, while Cameron Ragsdale earned his fifth save of the year.
The Owls got on the board first as Esteban Puerta singled to lead off the second and moved to third on a double by Labsan. Austin Langham picked up an RBI on a groundout to give FAU an early advantage.
Rutgers responded with two runs in the third with the help of a wild pitch and sacrifice fly. Kerr and Billy Endris singled to lead off the bottom half of the frame. After a flyout moved Kerr to third, the junior came in to score on a passed ball to tie the contest a two apiece.
Both teams put runners on in the late innings, but the defenses held strong until the eighth inning.
Christian Dicks singled to lead off the inning and moved to scoring position on a wild pitch. Sophomore Lambert then earned his first hit of the game, a single to right, which allowed Dicks to score as he slid around the tag at the plate to put the Owls on top 3-2.
Ragsdale allowed one hit in the ninth before coaxing a pair of groundouts to record the save.
The Owls will take on Middle Tennessee March 18-20 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Free audio broadcasts of the game will be available on FAUSports.com while Saturday's contest will be aired on Fox Sports Network.
