BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University used two strong pitching performances to split a double header with Robert Morris, Thursday night. RMU won the first game 2-1 and FAU responded with a 7-0 victory in the second to move to 20-3 on the season. The Parents' Weekend Tournament continues on Friday with games starting at 9 a.m. Tournament participants include: LIU-Brooklyn, Mercer, Minnesota, Rutgers, UMass, Robert Morris and FAU.
Game 1 Notables
- Junior pitcher Kylee Hanson recorded 15 strikeouts but took the loss (8-2).
- The Owls were held to three hits and just one left the infield.
- Delaney Rickey and Christina Martinez were 1-for-2. Emily Lochten was 1-for-3.
- Christina Martinez scored the Owls lone run.
Game Changer
FAU's Kylee Hanson recorded the first six outs of the game, all strike outs, but Robert Morris did all the damage it needed to do in the first inning. Hanson struck out the first batter, hit the following batter, struck out the third batter and then surrendered a two-out, two-run homer to Ashley Gerhart. FAU would scratch off a run in the bottom half of the first and it was the final run scored in the game for the 2-1 RMU final.
Game 2 Notables
- Madisyn Palmer was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
- Tatum Buckley was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI.
- Palmer and Emily Lochten recorded a double each and Palmer had three stolen bases.
- Amanda Wilson pitched a complete game shutout. Her third of the season. Wilson moved to 6-1 on the year.
Game Changer
FAU returned to the field to take advantage of two errors in the bottom of the first to score three unearned runs. While it would be the only runs FAU would need, the Owls added a run in both the second and third and used aggressive base running in the bottom of the fifth to score two and put the game away at 7-0.
Coaches Quote
"All of RMU's pitchers were freshmen, but the gal (Kaitlin Ellzy) who pitched the first game threw the ball really well," said Joan Joyce, FAU's head softball coach. "I don't think we were patient enough with her. We were hoping to get some people on and make them play and we didn't do that very well. Other than that, we played pretty well. We hit the ball hard but, it was right at people and we just couldn't get the base hit when we needed it. I credit their pitching for that."
