SAN ANTONIO, Texas â€" UTSA's Akunna Elonu buried a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds on the clock to defeat the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team a 57-54 in Conference USA action on Thursday.
"I think if you look at what cost us this game it was layups and free throws," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We got some easy looks, especially in the first half, that we weren't able to convert. Then we left a lot of points on the board on the free-throw line."
Senior Ali Gorrell and sophomore Sasha Cedeno combined to score 38 of the Owls' (11-12, 3-9 C-USA) 54 points on the night, making 13 of FAU's 18 baskets. Gorrell posted 20 while Cedeno set a career-high with 18 on five three-pointers.
Morgan Robinson hit a three-pointer to give FAU an early lead before an 9-0 run put UTSA on top as the Roadrunners (8-14, 4-8 C-USA) held the Owls without a basket for the next 4:17 before Cedeno made her first three-pointer to spark an 8-2 run. Gorrell scored on a fast break with 29 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the contest at 13 apiece.
Gorrell scored six of FAU's 12 second-quarter points as the teams traded leads and tied the game on three occasions. With UTSA up by three, Gorrell again scored on a fast break in the closing seconds of the half to send the game to intermission with the Roadrunners on top 26-25.
An 11-3 run to open the third gave UTSA a game-high lead of nine at the 7:01 mark. The Owls stormed back on a 9-0 run of their own as Gorrell tied the game at 37 on yet another fast-break layup. Robinson made a three at the buzzer to give FAU a 40-39 lead going into the fourth.
FAU took the lead on a Raven Doyle at the 8:56 mark, but the Owls couldn't find the bottom of the basket over the next 5:34 as UTSA took a four-point lead. With 28 seconds to play and UTSA leading 54-51, Kat Wright made her first basket of the game â€" a three-pointer â€" to tie the contest for the sixth time. The Roadrunners ran the clock down before finding Elonu on the left wing where she buried the game-winning three. FAU inbounded the ball in the front court with 2.8 left, but the horn sounded just after a turnover as the Owls lost their fifth straight C-USA game.
The Owls travel to El Paso, Texas to take on (RV) UTEP on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. ET. Live audio is available on FAUSports.com.
