TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University men's and women's cross country squads crossed the finish line for the final time in 2016, setting multiple personal bests and top program times at the NCAA South Regional, part of the DI Cross Country Championships.
Men's Notables:
- For the first time this year, the men ran a 10K length. Just as at the C-USA Championship, the team's top finisher was Conor Fitzgerald in a time of 34:01. He gained multiple spots on every split, up 17 spots from the 3K mark to the finish line
- Ross Rabalais and Jonathan Werble were next, three spots apart, in respective final marks of 34:21 and 34:32. Rabalais had the biggest gain at the end, passing four runners in the last 1,000 meters
- In his first NCAA meet, Lachlan Shiver wrapped at 35:18, while John Marting ended at 37:27
- Three finishes entered into the all-time program top 10 in the 10K, while one was just two slots off: Fitzgerald now holds the fifth-fastest 10K time ever, and the best since 2014; Rabalais is seventh and Werble is eighth; and Shiver is now 12th and finished less than nine seconds away from No. 10
Women's Notables:
- Similar to the men, the women competed in a longer 6K event, and for the second straight postseason meet, junior Liz Wellman was the squad's best, in a time of 22:58. She gained a remarkable eight spots between the 5K mark and the finish line
- Another junior, Christina Schultz, navigated the course in 23:19
- Johanna Freeman was third on the team at 24:07, with Sophia Clark only five spots behind her at 24:29
- Two more Owls, each making their NCAA competition debut, were three slots apart. Shannon Grace posted a time of 24:32, and fellow freshman Emily Ludwig came in at 24:57
- For Wellman, it was her second-best 6K time; for all of the rest, it blew away their previous standards
What's Next:
The entirety of the men's roster will begin preparation for next season, with no seniors on the squad. The women will join their track counterparts for practice as the 2017 indoor track season approaches. The first competition this upcoming spring will be in Birmingham, Alabama on Jan. 13.
