Volleyball Drops Two at Lipscomb Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -â€" The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team lost a pair of matches at the Lipscomb Invitational on Friday.
FAU (4-2) lost to Pepperdine in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-20) in their first match of the day. The first set was tied 7-7 before the Waves went on 11-5 run, prompting an FAU timeout. The break rejuvenated the Owls and they rallied to take the first set 25-23. Maja Ristic had three kills and three total blocks down the stretch.
The score was tied at seven again in the second set when Pepperdine went on a scoring spurt. FAU was unable to make up the deficit and dropped the second set 25-18. In set number three, the Owls got out to a fast start, taking a 10-5 lead. The Waves came back to tie the score at 13 and again at 17, before eventually taking the set 25-21.
Pepperdine took a 5-0 advantage in the fourth set before FAU answered. The set was competitive the rest of the way, featuring 10 ties and four lead changes. The 10th and final tie came at 18 before the Waves closed on a 7-2 run to clinch the match.
The Owls were swept by Ball State (30-28, 25-21, 25-17) in their second match of the day. In the first set, the score was tied at 11 when BSU went on an 11-3 run to take a 22-14 lead. From that point, FAU was able to force the score all the way to 29-28 before the Cardinals won the next point to take the set. The second set was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams battling for control of the set. The score with tied at 20 when a 5-1 BSU run gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. In set number four, the Owls were competitive, but Ball State kept the lead and won the set 25-17.
The Owls return to the court at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday to face Lipscomb. The match will air on ESPN3.com.
