BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team won both of its matches at the FAU Invitational, and won the tournament title on Saturday night.
FAU swept Binghamton (25-15, 25-15, 25-18) in their first match on Saturday. Kristina Rankovic served the Owls out to a 6-0 lead in the first set. The lead ballooned to as many as 13, with FAU winning the set 25-15. In set number two, it was Genesis Viera's serving that sparked a huge run, leading to another 25-15 victory. Set number three was the closest of the match. The eighth and final tie of the set was at 18 before FAU scored seven straight points to clinch the match. Brittney Brown led all players with 13 kills.
The Owls outlasted Georgia Southern (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) in the final match of the tournament. FAU trailed early in the first set before a 7-0 run made the score 14-10 in the Owls' favor. The Eagles cut the margin to a single point, but another FAU run put the set away. Nathalie Rosado's serving provided the Owls with a seven-point cushion, 12-5, in the second set. GSU pulled to within one, but four straight FAU points put the Owls up two sets to none.
In set number three, the two teams went back and forth, as there were eight ties in the frame. With the score knotted at 16, the Owls forced GSU into six errors, including a block by Maja Ristic and Gabriela Martin to clinch the tournament championship.
Rosado, Martin and Brown were named to the all-tournament team, with Brown being named MVP. The 4-0 start is the best for FAU since 2005.
The Owls travel to Nashville, Tenn. next weekend for the Lipscomb Invitational.
