JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For the first time since 2011, the Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team opened the season 2-0 after knocking off North Florida on the road Sunday in a 1-0 shutout.
"We are excited to start off the season with back to back wins and I was proud of the fight we showed today," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "The heat and humidity was real in Jacksonville and Sunday afternoon games are always a grind."
The Owls dominated control of the match, taking 14 shots while holding the Ospreys (1-1) to just three. Ten of FAU's 14 shots were on goal, keeping the UNF defense on its heels much of the day.
FAU's lone goal came in the 12th minute, off the foot of sophomore Asta Arnadottir on her birthday. Junior newcomer Erica Burt provided an assist to set Arnadottir up for her first goal of the year on a long cross from the left side which just beat the UNF keeper.
"The early goal helped," Baker said. "Erica Burt played a great ball into back space for Asta Arnadottir to run onto and finish. We had some good spells of soccer and had a hand full of one-on-one opportunities throughout, but couldn't seem to add the insurance goal."
In the goal for FAU, junior Sydney Drinkwater made a pair of saves and picked up her ninth career shutout to move into a tie for sixth all-time in the FAU record book.
"Sydney Drinkwater was good in goal and the team defended well," Baker said. "We pressed well in packs and that transitioned into quality offensive sequences. Our ball circulation and spacing within the system was better today than on Friday night."
The Owls remain on the road for their next two games, taking on Sam Houston State and Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on Friday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 30, respectively. FAU opens its home slate on Friday, Sept. 4 in a battle against the University of Miami at 7 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
