The Chicago Cubs selected Florida Atlantic University junior right-handed pitcher Kyle Miller in the 19th round, the 563rd pick of the 2015 Major League Baseball Draft.
"I'm very happy for Kyle and his family," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "He had a great year for us and his hard work has paid off. I look forward to following his career."
Miller earned a spot in the starting rotation for the Owls, pitching the series' openers. He led FAU with seven wins and struck out a team-high 62 batters while giving up just 18 walks on the year. Miller dealt six shutout innings with a career-high 10 strikeouts in his 2015 debut against UConn, allowing only one hit. Miller is the fifth consecutive Owl Friday starter to be drafted dating back to 2008, joining Austin Gomber, Ryan Garton, Mike Gibson and Mickey Storey.
Miller appeared in 24 games as an Owl with 18 starts while compiling a 6-3 record. He tossed 92.0 innings, struck out 69 and walked just 21 while holding opponents to a .299 average.
The Owls finished the 2015 season 42-19 and ranked as high as No. 12 nationally and made their 11th NCAA postseason appearance. Miller is the 16th player selected in the MLB draft since McCormack became the head coach in 2009. He joins Brendon Sanger, Roman Collins and Seth McGarry, who also were selected in the 2015 MLB draft.
