BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team scored at least eight runs for the 23rd time this season to defeat Old Dominion 8-2, taking the three-game series with two wins.
Esteban Puerta went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run while Brendon Sanger was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Sophomore Stephen Kerr hit his first career home run in the late innings to seal the FAU victory.
"We scored runs when we had to," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "Those guys did a good job pitching against us, but we had some really good at-bats."
The Owls (32-10, 15-6 C-USA) took control early as Kerr led off the game with a first-pitch single and came in to score on Sanger's first double.
ODU (20-23, 7-14 C-USA) threatened with two on in the fourth before FAU starter Brandon Rhodes ended the rally with a three-pitch strikeouts.
Sanger opened the bottom of the frame with another double, his fourth-consecutive extra-base hit. A Roman Collins single put runners on the corners, setting up Puerta for a two-RBI double to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Monarchs got on the board in the fifth with back-to-back doubles. With runners at the corners, Sanger showed prowess with his defense, making a catch and gunning down the runner at home to keep FAU on top by two.
Back-to-back walks by Collins and Puerta set up an RBI single by Christian Dicks to set the lead at three once more.
ODU again scored in the seventh, but left two on base in both the seventh and eighth as the Monarchs stranded 10 runners on the day.
Puerta opened the eighth with his third hit of the game and scored on an RBI single by CJ Chatham. With two outs, Kerr hit his two-run blast to left on a full count to put the Owls up 7-2. Brett Lashley hit a double on the first pitch he saw and hustled around to score on a line-drive single by Sanger to increase the advantage to 8-2.
Rhodes took the win with one run allowed in 5.2 innings while senior Seth McGarry picked up his second save, giving up just one hit to the 11 batters he faced to close out the game.
FAU hosts FGCU in non-conference action on Tuesday, April 28 at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
