BOCA RATON, Fla. - A hot start allowed Old Dominion to hand the Florida Atlantic University baseball team its worst loss of the season on Friday as the Owls dropped the Conference USA matchup 15-3.
"We weren't sharp," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "We hadn't played in a week and didn't really get to practice because of the weather and exams, but it's no excuse. They [ODU] did a great job."
The Monarchs (20-21, 7-12 C-USA) posted seven runs over the first two innings as ODU fights to make the Conference USA Tournament.
The Owls (31-10, 13-6 C-USA) got on the board in the third as freshman Ryan Miller hit his first career home run, a solo shot to right center.
ODU answered with a lone run in the top of the fifth before CJ Chatham singled and scored on an RBI single by Brett Lashley in the bottom of the frame.
The Owls cut the lead to 8-3 in the seventh as Christian Dicks led off the inning with a walk and CJ Chatham doubled. Dicks then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Stephen Kerr.
The Monarchs, however, exploded for six runs on five hits in the eighth inning to seal the contest.
Kyle Miller was tagged with just his second loss of the season, allowing one earned run on three hits and a walk in the first inning.
ODU's Sam Sinnen took the win, dealing seven innings of work with three earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts.
Chatham went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Ricky Santiago was 2-for-4.
