BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team beat Bethune-Cookman 7-1 and tied Hofstra 5-5 on the final day of the Parents' Weekend Tournament. The tie was the first in program history.
Emily Lochten led off the bottom of the second inning against Bethune-Cookman with a bunt single, then stole second before coming around to score on an Alex Miller base hit. FAU (19-5-1) broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third. Lochten came up with runners on the corners and drove in Christina Martinez. After Laura Mannwalked to load the bases, Mickey Bell was hit by a pitch to score Carnesha Thompson. Miller then drove in her second run of the game with a single to right. Tatum Buckley's base hit scored Mann for the final run of the inning.
Mann's two-run double in the fourth inning allowed Lochten and Christina Martinez to score for FAU's final runs of the contest. The Wildcats' only run came in the top of the sixth on a double down the right field line. Samantha Messerthrew a complete game four-hitter for her fifth win of the year.
FAU tied Hofstra 5-5 in the final game of the day. The game was a scoreless tie until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Christina Martinez's infield single plated Delaney Rickey, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead. Amanda Wilson shut the Pride down for most of the day, but when Hofstra loaded the bases in the seventh, a double to center put the Pride up 3-1.
The Owls were down to their last strike with a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh when Rickey collided with the Pride shortstop on an infield single before advancing to third. Rickey was initially ruled safe, then called out after a protest from the Hofstra coaching staff. After an extended meeting of the umpiring crew, the original call stood and FAU had runners on the corners. Back-to-back singles by Lochten and Mann tied the game, but a flyout sent the game to extras.
Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth inning, despite the international tiebreaker. Hofstra scored on a sacrifice bunt and sac fly in the top of the 10th. FAU answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run coming on Miller's third RBI of the day. The Pride scored again in the 11th, but Lochten tied the game with her third RBI of the day, this one scoring Lindsey Shell. After another flyout ended the inning, play was halted due to Hofstra's travel plans. Wilson pitched all 11 innings in the contest.
The Owls will face Florida State on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available at fausports.com. For tickets, call the FAU Ticket Office at 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
