BOCA RATON, Fla. - Six runs in the bottom of the seventh broke the game open for Florida Atlantic University's baseball team in a 10-3 victory over Rutgers.
With the Owls holding a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, first baseman Brett Lashley lead-off with a single to right. Senior Brendon Sanger followed with a single down the leftfield line to bring Rickey Santiago to the plate. Santiago, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI on the day, drew a walk to load the bases. Roman Collins, hitting in the five hole, hit a hard grounder that bounced off of the chest of the Rutgers second baseman which turned a potential double play into a run and the shifted the momentum towards the Owls, who would score five more times in the inning, including two off a Ryan Miller double.
The Owls, which improved to 13-2 on the year and ranked No. 24 nationally, scored a run in the second and third and then relied on the arm of starter Drew Jackson to hold the Scarlet Knights at bay. Jackson, 3-0, gave up his first earned run of the season in the top of the sixth. The Naples, Fla. native opened his senior campaign with 25 innings without allowing an earned run.
"I thought Drew (Jackson) pitched fantastic," said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "They all pitched well."
The Owls got strong relief, for the second-consecutive game, with Devon Carr not allowing an earned run in the seventh, while Weston Clemente and Blake Sanderson faced the minimum in the eighth and ninth.
Offensively, Santiago hit his fifth double of the year. Lashley and Sanger were 2-for-5. Lashley scored twice while Sanger scored once and recorded his fifth double of the year. Roman Collins was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and a double. Shortstop CJ Chatham had an RBI triple, but the most unusual hit was Chatham's fellow middle-infielder Stephen Kerr, who lead-off the game with a bunt double.
FAU will be back in action Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available at www.fau.edu or you can follow the Owls via twitter at @FAU_Baseball. For tickets, both season and individual game, call 1-866-FAU Owls. Tickets also are available at the gate.
