BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Owls scored the game's first run without a hit and that was the tale of Florida Atlantic University baseball team's 3-2 victory over the University of North Florida (6-8) Wednesday afternoon.
"On Tuesday and Wednesday, it is sometimes hard to win back-to-back games" said John McCormack, FAU's head baseball coach. "We didn't play particularly well. Give them (UNF) credit, they pitched well. We only had three hits but we made them count. (We) scored one run without even a hit. We were able to be patience, take some walks, got a bunt down and were able to get a sac fly. In these type of things (the play of the game) just take the win and move on."
Freshman catcher Ryan Miller hit a sacrifice fly to right center to plate Brett Lashley and the game's final run. Senior Reily Monkmon returned to the mound to close out the game and pick up his third win of the season. FAU, which is ranked No. 24 in this week's DI Baseball poll, improved to 11-2 on the year.
The two teams battled for 12 innings Tuesday night with FAU taking the 8-7 victory. Both teams knew Wednesday's game would be determined by the pitchers. The game didn't disappoint.
FAU scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third without a hit. Billy Endris drew a lead-off walk. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Stephen Kerr, who had two of the team's three RBI, hit a sac fly to right to score Endris which gave the Owls a 1-0 lead.
UNF tied the game at one in the top of the sixth. The Owls struck again scoring their second run, once again without recording a hit. Miller lead-off with a walk. Christian Dicks did the same and the duo moved up on a sac bunt by shortstop Randy Oliva. With two outs and runners on second and third, Kerr hit into a fielder's choice with UNF electing to catch Dicks trying to advance to third. Dicks remained in the rundown long enough for Miller to score, prior to the third out.
UNF tied the game once again, at two, in the top of the eighth only to see FAU, which managed just three hits on the day, get back-to-back singles by Lashley and Brendon Sanger. Senior third baseman Ricky Santiago followed with a fly to right allowing Lashley to move to third. Roman Collins, who broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fourth, drew a walk to load the bases for Miller's sac fly and game-winning RBI.
Monkmon picked up the win for the Owls after pitching 1.2 innings. He gave up just one hit and retired two by strikeout. Sean Labsan drew his first start of the season and pitched four strong innings. Labsan, who drove in the winning run Tuesday night, scattered two hits and struck out three. He was relieved by Seth McGarry, who pitched 1.2 innings. McGarry was charged with an unearned run on one hit. Devon Carr, who also saw action Tuesday night and gave the Owls an inning and a third. He two was charged with an unearned run. John Sebelle came in on back-to-back nights to record an out and a hit. On the day, the FAU pitching staff scattered seven hits, worked around three Owl errors and stranded 10 UNF bases runners.
"Labsan, arguably you could say, this was the best outing since he has been at FAU," said McCormack. "He didn't walk a guy. He threw strikes and threw strikes with his breaking ball. That is really good to see."
FAU will be back in action this weekend, playing host to a three-game series with Rutgers. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.fau.edu or you can follow the Owls via twitter at @FAU_Baseball.
