Softball's Melissa Martinez Named FAU Player of the Week

BOCA RATON, Fla. -
Florida Atlantic University women's softball player Melissa Martinez has been named FAU Player of the Week after racking up a grand slam and a home run during the FAU Kick-Off Classic last weekend.
In the team's season opener and 12-7 win over Arkansas, Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. On day two, the junior hit a grand slam to pull the Owls within one run of Kansas in the seventh inning rally.
On the final day of the Kick-Off Classic, Martinez drove in her twin sister Christina for the fourth run in the top of the fourth inning in the 7-0 win against Penn State. Martinez also had an RBI double and a three-run homerun in the 7-0 victory over LIU Brooklyn on Sunday. For the week, she hit .368 with a .789 slugging percentage, 10 RBI and five runs scored.
FAU will host its annual Strike-Out Cancer Tournament on Feb. 13-15 featuring Tulsa, Michigan State, Providence, and Maryland. The Owls will begin play with back-to-back games on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. against Tulsa and 8:15 p.m. versus Michigan State.
