BOCA RATON, Fla. - Eight unanswered runs with the help of six doubles guided the Florida Atlantic University baseball team to a 9-5 comeback victory over Monmouth on Friday night.
The Owls (7-2) will look to win the series with a 4 p.m. start against the Hawks (0-4) on Saturday at the FAU Baseball Stadium. Game three is slated for a noon first pitch on Sunday, March 1.
"The doubles were great and allowed us to score some guys from first base," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "The bullpen pitched well and all-in-all we won and I'm happy, but we've got to be better."
The Hawks posted 11 hits, including three doubles, but the FAU pitching staff recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest.
Monmouth jumped ahead early by posting two runs on two hits and an FAU error in the first inning.
FAU responded in the third as Stephen Kerr hit a double on a ball that ricocheted off the MU first baseman and was driven in by Brett Lashley.
The Hawks extended the lead to 5-1 in the next frame on two hit batters, two singles and a double.
The Owls had just one hit going into the sixth inning before the offense came to life. Lashley drew a walk and got into scoring position on a double by Brendon Sanger. The duo came in to score on a double by Roman Collins to cut the lead to 5-3.
FAU took the lead in the seventh as Ryan Miller walked and Christian Dicks doubled to make it a one-run game. Kerr hit a bunt single before Sanger hit his second consecutive double to plate Kerr for the tying run. A wild pitch and a balk allowed Sanger to put FAU on top 6-5. Ricky Santiago singled then scored on yet another double off the bat of Collins for a 7-5 advantage.
Miller singled and Dicks doubled to open the eighth as the Owls tacked on two more runs to reach the final of 9-5.
Senior Reily Monkman earned the win by recording one out in the seventh, striking out the only batter he faced while the Hawks had a runner on third. Bo Logan closed out the game with two strikeouts in the ninth in his sixth appearance of the year.
Kerr went 3-for-5 with two runs scored while Brendon Sanger was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Collins hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs as Dicks hit two doubles with two RBI and a run.
