BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - An 18-2 second half Hilltopper run was the key in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team's 71-68 loss to Western Kentucky on Thursday night.
The game started out fast as the two teams exchanged buckets to begin the game. FAU (8-18, 1-14 C-USA) went on a 10-1 run to take a 19-12 lead just over eight minutes into the game. WKU (17-10, 10-5) was able to trim the lead to 32-29 at the break.
The second half also began with an exchange of buckets before another Owls' run put them up 48-40 at the 14:46 mark. At that point, the Hilltoppers began their rally. A Javier Lacunza layup ended the rally and cut FAU's deficit to six, 58-52, with 7:27 to go. Three-pointers by Justin Massey, Solomon Poole and Jackson Trapp helped trim the margin to two at 70-68 with 34 seconds left.
After WKU split a trip to the free throw line, the Owls had a chance to tie the score, but their three-point attempt missed. Botley finished with 18 points and five assists, both game highs.
FAU will play its final road game of the season on Saturday vs. Marshall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. Live audio of the game will be available through FAUSports.com. All FAU games will be carried on ESPN West Palm 106.3, which has an APP for the Smart Phone platform.
