BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University softball team will make its first road trip of the season to play in this weekend's Purple and Gold Challenge, hosted by LSU. The Owls (13-1) have matched the best start in program history and have won 12 games in a row. FAU received votes in both the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.
FAU won its four games at last weekend's FAU Invitational by a combined score of 41-5, including an 18-0 win over Florida A&M for head coach Joan Joyce's 800th win. Junior Melissa Martinez hit .833 over the weekend, including a 1.750 slugging percentage.
The Owls open play on Friday morning against Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks (5-6) have won their last two games, but haven't played since a 15-3 win over Texas Southern on Feb. 18. Northwestern State (8-8) will be FAU's second opponent on Friday. The Demons are currently riding a six-game winning streak.
After a rematch with Stephen F. Austin on Saturday morning, FAU will play the host Tigers on Saturday night. LSU (16-0) is currently ranked 7th in both polls. Ball State will be the Owls' final opponent of the weekend, on Sunday morning. The Cardinals (6-8) have lost four games in a row.
