BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team picked up a 2-1 victory over Ohio State on Sunday to take the series with back-to-back wins.
The Owls (6-1) needed just five hits for the win as starting pitcher Robbie Coursel threw a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Junior Seth McGarry earned the win in relief as one of five pitchers utilized by the Owls. Bo Logan picked up his first save of the season as he recorded the final four outs. Devon Carr and Reily Monkman also saw time, dealing a combined 1.2 innings of perfect pitching.
"I think one of our primary strengths is defense," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "Some of the plays that Stephen Kerr and CJ Chatham made on Saturday were really good and today we played another good game of defense and we got the hits when we needed them."
Both teams were held scoreless until freshman Ryan Miller opened the sixth inning with an infield single. After stealing second, Miller scored on an RBI single to left by junior Brett Lashley, giving the Owls a 1-0 advantage.
Ohio State (4-2) led off the seventh with a single by Troy Kuhn, but he was picked off by McGarry at first. After a Buckeye double, Miller fielded a ball in left and fired it home to Kevin Abraham in time to get Tre' Gantt out at the plate, keeping the Owls ahead.
Esteban Puerta and Christian Dicks were each hit by pitches to open the bottom of the seventh and advanced to scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by CJ Chatham. An error by pitcher Kyle Michalik allowed Stephen Kerr to reach safely and Puerta to score with two outs to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Buckeyes got on the board with three singles in the ninth and had the tying run on third base, but Logan struck out the final batter on three pitches to pick up the save and give FAU its sixth victory of the young season.
The Owls host nationally-ranked Florida at Roger Dean Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. For ticket information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com. A live, free audio broadcast will be provided on FAUSports.com with Brandon Goodwin calling the action.
