BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic University's softball team improved to 9-1 on the season with two victories in Saturday's FAU "Strike Out" for Cancer Tournament. The first win was a 9-3 victory over Michigan State (6-3) and the final game of the night was 10-2, five-inning, win over Providence (0-4).
The Owls scored in each of the first three innings, plating two runs in each of the first two innings and one in the third to take a 5-0 margin into the top of the fourth when Michigan State scratched across its first run. FAU then added three in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth while MSU scored again in the sixth and seventh for the game's final.
The Martinez sisters accounted for five of the team's 11 hits in the contest. Melissa Martinez was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Christina Martinez was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Third baseman Carnesha Thompson and first baseman Laura Mann rounded the multiple-hit Owls, both going 2-for-4. Thompson was credited with two RBI.
Samantha Messer worked the circle for the Owls and moved to 2-1 on the young season. Messer tossed the seven-inning complete game and held MSU to two earned runs and scatter seven hits. She walked two.
The Owls scored in all but one frame of the night cap. Lindsey Shell led off the game with a bunt that and moved to third on a throwing error. She scored the next play. Mann belted her second homer of the season and the Owls fifth of the year in the top of the second to give FAU a 2-0 lead.
FAU capitalized on three hits and an error in the third to add three runs. Tatum Buckley, who tossed five innings, allowed just three hits and one earned run, hit a lead-off shot over the left field wall in the top of the fourth. Buckley's homer, her first collegiate, was the sixth of the season for the Owls, in just nine games which is half of what the Owls hit in all of 2014. FAU would add two more in the inning and another two in the sixth to close out the game. Amanda Wilson relived Buckley, who moved to 2-0 on the year, in the sixth. Wilson retired two of the three batters she faced.
Offensively, Christina Martinez and Mann were 2-for-4 in the game. While Mann had two RBI in the game, Thompson was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Melissa Martinez added two RBI going 1-for-3.
The Owls will close out the "Strike Out" Cancer Tournament with the final game of the tournament on Sunday. FAU's game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. versus Maryland.
