BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team narrowly missed upsetting one of the top teams in Conference USA on Saturday as the Owls fell 67-65 to Southern Miss at FAU Arena.
FAU junior Morgan Robinson scored a career-high 19 points and joined freshmen Sasha Cedeno and Melinda Myers with seven rebounds.
The Owls (11-12, 5-7 C-USA) posted 44 rebounds in the contest, the second most in a game this season, while holding Southern Miss to 37.
FAU jumped out to a 5-0 run within the first minute and held the advantage through the first quarter of the game. The Golden Eagles (17-7, 10-3 C-USA) took their first lead of the game at the 8:37 mark on a second-chance jumper by Brooke Rhodes. A turnover by FAU allowed USM's Jerontey Clemons to increase the lead to three at 22-19 just seconds later.
The Owls quickly got five points to retake the lead as Kat Wright hit a pair of free throws and Malia Kency buried a three. FAU took a 30-29 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks to a free throw by Myers.
A 12-0 run early in the second half put FAU in a comfortable position at 42-32 on another jumper by Wright as Robinson picked up her third assist on the previous four possessions.
FAU would extend the lead to a game-high 13 at the 11:52 mark as Kency made her second three-pointer of the night.
After an attempted comeback by the Golden Eagles, Robinson made a three pointer with 3:48 to play, but it would be FAU's final basket of the game.
With the Owls up 65-55 with 2:30 left, FAU would commit four turnovers and Southern Miss made five of its last six field goal attempts to end the game on a 12-0 run to win the contest. Kierra Jordan made a go-ahead layup with seven seconds left and Tamara Jones made a free throw with 1.7 on the clock to ice the game.
FAU's 22 turnovers was the most in a game this season.
