DENTON, Texas - After controlling the game for the opening quarter of the contest, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game with a 74-55 loss at North Texas in Conference USA action.
The Mean Green posted its best offensive performance this season to improve to 4-20 on the year and 3-10 in C-USA play.
Shaneese Bailey scored FAU's first four points, followed by a Danneal Ford jumper to put the Owls (11-13, 5-8 C-USA) up 6-0 just four minutes in. FAU would extend its lead to a game-high seven points at the 12:55 mark on a Sasha Cedeno three-pointer.
An 11-1 run over the next 2::16 gave NT a three point lead at 19-16. The Mean Green would go on an 8-1 run to close out the half up 39-27 and BreAnna Dawkins made a jumper on the first possession of the second half to extend the lead to 14.
Morgan Robinson made FAU's second long ball to whittle the lead to 11 before another big run of 10-2, extended to 19-5 to go up 58-35 with 13:40 to play. A three-point play following the third media timeout gave NT its largest advantage in a game this season at 26 points, 63-37 with 11:10 left as the Mean Green had 38 rebounds.
The Owls cut the lead to 21 three more times before a jumper by Cedeno with 1:23 remaining narrowed the advantage to 19 points. After another jumper in the paint by NT, Melinda Myers made FAU's final basket with 19 seconds left to conclude the game at 74-55.
Bailey led FAU in scoring with 17 points while Myers tallied seven rebounds. The Owls shot 29 percent in the first half and 31 percent for the game and went 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. Fourteen of FAU's points came from the free throw line.
The Owls go to Houston to face Rice on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. ET.
