MISSOULA, Mont. â€" The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak Sunday with a 69-64 victory over Tennessee State in the consolation game of Montana's Lady Griz Classic.
The Owls (6-3) were led by senior Morgan Robinson's 18 points â€" 15 of which came in the second half. Fellow senior Ali Gorrell posted 16 points and led FAU on the boards with nine rebounds. Sophomores Sasha Cedeno and Danneal Ford each tallied nine points and four rebounds.
"I think we're shooting the ball better now," FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. "We just have to get the continuity down together offensively. We're not playing our best basketball, but you don't necessarily want to be playing your best now."
FAU started hot from beyond the arc, making three three-pointers in the first 1:25 to take an eight point lead. TSU (5-6) cut the lead to one at 12-11 with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter after FAU did not score a field goal over nearly five minutes of action. Robinson scored her only first-half points on a three-pointer to spark a 7-0 run to end the first with the Owls up 19-11.
The Tigers would shut down the FAU shooting again in the second quarter, allowing just two field goals to cut the lead to 26-21 at the half.
TSU got its first lead of the tournament with 4:36 remaining in the third quarter before Robinson hit another three to put the Owls back on top.
After Robinson made the opening basket of the fourth quarter, TSU went on a 9-0 run to take its largest lead of the day at 51-47 with 7:55 to play. The Owls responded with a 13-0 run, sparked again by two Robinson three-pointers, to go back up by nine.
Another late surge by the Tigers cut the FAU advantage to 65-64 with 1:11 on the clock before Ford and Gorrell closed out the game with four consecutive free throws.
The Owls return to action on Dec. 29, opening the FAU Holiday Tournament against Bethune-Cookman at FAU Arena. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
