BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team improved to 4-0 with an 83-55 victory over Delaware State in the opener of the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament, thanks to 11 first-half three-pointers.
The Owls saw top performances by Malia Kency, who posted 19 points and six three-pointers, and Kat Wright who scored a career-high 18 points with four three-pointers and six rebounds. Sasha Cedeno tallied eight points with career marks in rebounds and assists with seven and six, respectively. Melinda Myers again led FAU on the boards with nine rebounds.
FAU came out of the gates strong with the 11 deep balls in the first half, including six in the first quarter. The Owls recorded assists on 16 of its 19 first-half baskets, with no player having more than three. Kency and Wright were each 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the opening half.
After a three-point play gave DSU (0-5) an early lead, FAU took its first lead at the 8:16 mark and never looked back. Kency made three of her three-pointers in the fourth quarter to give FAU a 27-14 lead at the break.
FAU went on a 19-4 run late in the second quarter, featuring four three-pointers in that span. Sophomore newcomer Halee Davis got her first official action of the season in the second quarter, posting three points with a steal and a rebound.
The Hornets cut the lead down to 23 early in the third before a four-point play by Kency stifled the momentum.
Davis scored FAU's last basket of the game at the 1:25 mark of the fourth to give the Owls their largest lead of the game at 33 before the Hornets closed on a 5-0 run.
