BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" After its best start since 1991, the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team fell 76-53 to South Dakota in the championship game of the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday.
The Owls (4-1) saw three players reach double-digit scoring, paced by Ali Gorrell with 12. Malia Kency and Morgan Robinson each scored ten while Melinda Myers once more led FAU with eight rebounds.
Gorrell scored FAU's first two baskets of the game, but the Owls went cold as South Dakota (3-3) went on an 18-2 run before a pair of free throws cut the Coyote lead to 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.
A 6-1 run in the closing minutes of the half extended the advantage to 33-15 as a jumper by Myers was FAU's only bucket after the 8:04 mark of the second quarter.
The Coyotes increased the lead to 28 with 4:45 to play in the third before the Owls crafted a 10-0 run to make it 50-30 and whittled the lead to as few as 14 at the 0:58 mark.
Gorrell and Kency were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances against Delaware State and South Dakota.
FAU would not make a field goal in the final 5:21 as it suffered its first loss of the 2015-15 season. The Owls get a week off before facing Keiser on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS or visit FAUSports.com.
