BOCA RATON, Fla. â€" The Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 71-67 victory over Milwaukee on Tuesday.
The Owls were led by Ali Gorrell's 20 points and eight rebounds while Danneal Ford tallied 11 points. Raven Doyle scored a career-high nine while Ra'Kyra Gabriel and Melinda Myers each grabbed eight boards.
Four different Owls scored to start the contest to give FAU an 8-3 lead just three minutes into the contest before a 7-0 run by Milwaukee (1-1) gave the Panthers their first lead at the 5:16 mark of the first quarter.
After three lead changes in a first quarter, Milwaukee extended its 22-21 lead to 26-21 early in the second. The Owls rallied back to take a 34-31 lead on a three-pointer by Gabriel and led by as many as six before a late jumper cut the lead to 39-35 at the half.
The third quarter featured four lead changes and two ties, but FAU held on to a 52-50 lead into the fourth before the Panthers tied the contest just 24 seconds in.
A 7-0 run, capped off by two free throws by Doyle, gave FAU its largest lead of the night at 61-54 with 6:01 to play.
Milwaukee would cut the advantage down to two points four times before a pair of free throws by Ford with two seconds left iced the game for the Owls.
