OXFORD, Ohio - Career highs from C.J. Turman, Adonis Filer and Matthew Reed helped the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team fend off a tenacious Miami (Ohio) squad 75-69 on Saturday. The game was the middle game of the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge.
The trio combined for 14 of FAU's first 15 points and the Owls took a 15-8 lead. The lead remained at least three points for the rest of the half. FAU (1-3) led 28-23 at the half. Coming out of the break, the RedHawks cut the lead to one, 31-30. The Owls quickly bounced back as they went on a 6-0 run to push their advantage back out to seven.
Miami answered with another run, this one 12-2, to take a 42-39 lead with 14:23 to go in the game. The lead was five with just under 10 minutes left when six straight points allowed the Owls to regain the advantage 54-53. The two teams exchanged the lead for the next several minutes when Marquan Botley hit a three-pointer to put FAU up 65-62 with 1:40 left. After a defensive stop, the Owls made 10 straight free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
Turman set career-high in points and rebounds for the second time in three games with 19 and 12, respectively. He ended the night shooting 7-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Filer led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the floor. Reed added 13 points and seven rebounds for career highs in both categories. As a team, the Owls shot 26-of-30 (86.7%) from the charity stripe.
