A 16-0 second half run proved fatal in the Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team's 60-58 loss to Northeastern on Friday. The game was the first in the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge.
Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the early going and combined for just three points in the first four minutes. Eventually, the offenses found their groove and the momentum changed hands several times in the first half. Northeastern led 19-17 late when the Owls went on a 9-4 run to take a 26-23 lead into the halftime break.
FAU continued to stretch the lead after the intermission, with an Adonis Filer jumper making the score 39-27 five and a half minutes into the second half. The lead was still double figures, 48-38, when Northeastern made its big rally, holding the Owls scoreless for more than five minutes and taking a 54-48 lead in the process.
To its credit, FAU didn't fold and answered with a 10-2 run of its own, capped off by a Jeantal Cylla three-pointer, to go up 58-56 with 1:18 remaining. Zach Stahl made a twisting layup to tie the score. After the Owls missed what would have been a go-ahead three, the Huskies were able to find a seam in the FAU defense for the game-winning slam.
The loss dropped FAU to 0-3, while Northeastern improved to 3-0. Marquan Botley scored 14 points and added four assists to lead FAU. The Owls continue action in the Men Against Breast Cancer Challenge on Saturday when they play the host, Miami of Ohio. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. and live stats and live audio will be available at fausports.com. In-game updates will be available at twitter.com/FAU_Hoops.
