The Florida Atlantic University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) partnered with A.D. Henderson Elementary School and Verde Elementary School in an effort to raise money for Boca Helping Hands. The event was held as part of a Conference USA food drive titled "Let's SAAC Hunger," in which all the C-USA schools participate.
"Our student-athletes embrace their responsibility to serve our community," said Pat Chun, FAU's Vice President and Director of Athletics. "We take great pride in the amount of service our student-athletes provide. What makes this event so special is that it is student-athlete driven and managed. It has grown over the last three years and we expect even greater results to come."
Boca Helping Hands serves hot meals to individuals and also brings groceries to those who are unable to afford them. Over the course of one week, SAAC achieved a record breaking amount of food donations. The drive raised $1,263, more than the previous two years combined.
"We collected more food this year than in 2013 and 2014 combined," said Carnesha Thompson, the 2015-16 SAAC president and a senior on the FAU softball team. "It shows the dedication all FAU student athletes have and their desire to support the community that supports us."
The volleyball team secured the most donations among the 21 FAU intercollegiate FAU teams participating. FAU student-athletes led by SAAC, continues to make a difference in the Boca Raton community with more than 2,600 hours in 2014-15 and are well on their way to the 3,000 hour goal for 2015-16.
