BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team earned its largest margin of victory in a Conference USA game with a 3-0 win over Southern Miss on Sunday. The Owls (9-7, 3-3 C-USA) also swept a C-USA weekend for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater earned her 14th career shutout to move into a tie for second all-time while senior Claire Emslie's 25th career goal moved her into a tie for third all-time at FAU.
Drinkwater made five saves in the match while the Owls defense held USM (3-9-3, 1-5 C-USA) to just eight shots. FAU took 23 shots in the contest along with 12 corner kicks.
"I'm pleased," FAU Head Coach Patrick Baker said. "It's the first time we've had back-to-back wins on a weekend in Conference USA. We move to nine wins, so every year we've been here we've gone from five to seven to nine with several games left."
Emslie's game-winning goal came on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute, putting the Scotland native in third place all-time in game-winning goals in a career at FAU with eight.
"Our team had a very good first half performance - scoring two goals, getting 12 shots off in the run of play, manufacturing 7 corner kicks and setting a good tempo for most of the first 45 minutes.," Baker said. "Geovana Alves made a great timed run through the defense before getting taken down for a penalty kick. Our depth continues to produce for us, as Kelsey Parry picked out Sammy Rowland with a wonderful service to head in the second goal of the game."
In the 38th minute, junior Kelsey Parry lifted a ball in from close to midfield, finding Sammy Rowland, who lifted a header just over the USM keeper to double the lead to 2-0. The connection marked Parry's fourth point on the weekend after she scored and assisted Friday night. Parry now leads FAU with four assists on the season.
FAU's final goal came in the 82nd minute when Geovana Alves scored her team-leading seventh goal of the year on a header off of an assist by Sophie Sanchez.
"Our forwards created good looks for themselves but struggled to put much on frame in the second half," Baker said. "Their keeper had two very good saves and then we finally had another moment magic. Sophie Sanchez served a very good ball from the right flank which Alves headed home beautifully. Great to get three goals again on back-to-back Sundays, happy for the girls to get earn three straight conference wins for the first time and move to nine wins on the year. We still have a lot of work to do and need a good week of training before traveling again this weekend."
The Owls go on the road to take on Marshall in C-USA action on Friday, Oct. 16. A full recap will be available on FAUSports.com.
