BOCA RATON, Fla. - Sophomore Kat Wright scored five points in the final minute to give the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team a 71-68 win over Conference USA rival Charlotte on Thursday.
Wright ended the game with 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds while freshman Sasha Cedeno tied her career-high with 15 points. Morgan Robinson and Shaneese Bailey also reached double-digits with 14 and ten points, respectively.
The Owls (10-8, 4-3 C-USA) built up a large lead in the second half before Charlotte (7-13, 3-5) came back to take a lead with one minute remaining. Wright then hit a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to tie the game before she and fellow Bailey made 3-of-4 free throws to give FAU the victory.
The 49ers led for the first nine minutes of the contest, leading by as many as eight points before the Owls went on an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 22-21 on a jumper by Cedeno.
With a 31-30 lead with 4:30 to play in the half, redshirt freshman Raven Doyle scored back-to-back baskets and freshman Melinda Myers made a jumper in the closing minute to give FAU a 37-30 advantage at the intermission.
The Owls went on a 6-0 run and extended the lead to 51-35 in a stretch that saw seven consecutive baskets made by seven different players.
With FAU leading 59-44, however, the Owls went cold from the field as Charlotte stormed back on a 16-0 run to take its first lead of the second half at 60-59 with 4:45 to play.
There were seven lead changes in the next four minutes before Wright's three-pointer sparked the last-minute comeback.
