BOCA RATON, Fla. - An early 20-4 run by Old Dominion proved to be the downfall of the Florida Atlantic University women's basketball team as the Owls lost 72-44 in the Conference USA matchup on Saturday.
The Monarchs (13-7, 6-3 C-USA) held FAU to just six points over the first 11 minutes of the game to lead 24-6 before extending the advantage to 31-10 eight minutes later. FAU junior Ali Gorrell scored the team's first six points for the Owls (10-9, 4-4 C-USA), but her teammates couldn't find the bottom of the basket until the nine minute mark of the first half.
Gorrell had eight of FAU's 19 first-half points, the second-lowest first-half outing for the Owls this season (17 points at Marshall, Jan. 17.). Freshman Sasha Cedeno hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to cut the ODU lead to 38-19 at the break.
Bailey scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half and guided the Owls to pull within 19 at the 10:30 mark, but FAU could get no closer. Bailey scored nine straight points for FAU before going to the bench for the final 5:30.
The Monarchs went on an 8-2 run in that span to extend the lead to a game-high 28 points for the final score of 72-44.
ODU's Jennie Simms followed up her 45-point outing at FIU on Thursday with 19 points and ten rebounds against the Owls. Destinee Young also recorded a double-double with 13 points and ten boards. ODU's 55 rebounds is the most allowed by FAU this season.
Bailey ended the game with 15 points and seven rebounds while Gorrell ended the night with ten points. Freshman Melinda Myers contributed six rebounds and four second-half points.
The Owls go on the road next week to face UTEP at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 5 and UTSA on Sunday, Feb. 8 at noon ET. The UTSA matchup will be televised on Fox Sports.
