The Owls (6-3) lost to Howard in five sets (25-17, 19-25, 12-25, 25-19, 15-9) in their first match of the day. HU got out to an early lead in the first set and the Owls were unable to catch up, falling 25-17. The second set was tied at 4-4 before FAU went on a 13-5 run, on its way to a 25-19 victory.
FAU raced out to a 9-2 lead in the third set and kept a healthy lead throughout the frame as it won the set 25-12 to take a two sets to one lead. The fourth set was a back and forth affair that featured seven ties and two lead changes. The final tie came at 15 before the Bison went on a 10-4 run to take the set. The fifth set was close in the early going. The sides were level at 8 before Howard took the next six points, eventually winning the set and match 15-9. Rankovic led the team with 14 kills and added 10 digs.
In their second match of the day, the Owls defeated Southeastern Louisiana in four sets (25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16). The first set was knotted at 6 when FAU reeled off a 17-3 run on the way to a 25-14 win. FAU led by six points late in the second set before the Lions rallied to within a point at 24-23, but a Rankovic kill gave the Owls a commanding two sets to none lead.
Set number three was an exchange of scoring runs, as each time one team seemed ready to run away with the set, the other fought back to take the lead. The Owls were able to fight off three set points, but couldn't do it a fourth time, and the Lions took the set.
FAU used another big run to take a sizable advantage and clinched the match with a 25-16 fourth set victory. Rankovic ended the match with 13 kills and 11 digs. The Owls will wrap up the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic on Saturday with a match against host Tulane, starting at 8 p.m. eastern.
