BOCA RATON, Fla. - A nearly offensive performance by Brittney Brown led the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team to a sweep (25-18, 25-17, 25-23) of UAB in its Conference USA home opener on Friday.
The Owls (12-5, 3-1 C-USA) got off to a slow start in the first set, at the Blazers' sizable frontline caused problems in the early going. FAU got out to an early lead in the second set and never trailed in the frame, eventually winning 25-17. The Owls outhit UAB .455 to .226 in the set. The third set was the most competitive of the night, featuring 15 ties and five lead changes. The final tie came at 18-18. FAU scored the next two points, and while UAB trimmed the lead to a single point at 24-23, a Genesis Viera kill ended the match.
Brown hit .762 (17-1-21) on the night, while Viera recorded her fifth double-double of the night with 35 assists and 11 digs. The Owls won their conference home opener for the first time since 2008.
