Press release from Laredo Lemurs:
LAREDO, Texas - The Laredo Lemurs got more than they bargained for when they signed RHP Jeremy Strawn to his first professional contract. Strawn was a force on the mound for Laredo and has been voted the American Association Rookie of the Year.
Strawn was unbeatable in 2014. The Florida Atlantic University product went 9-0 and the Lemurs won all ten of his regular season starts. In addition to his knack for winning, Strawn put together a superlative ERA of 2.45.
When Strawn won ballgames for the Lemurs, he did not just coast by. Twice this year, the Bradenton, FL native pitched complete game shutouts. On July 27, Strawn held Grand Prairie scoreless on just five hits. He struck out five men in that game and walked a pair.
Strawn repeated the feat on August 20, once again against the AirHogs. This time, the Lemurs were on the road, but it did not seem to bother Strawn. He surrendered a measly four hits over nine shutout innings and struck out nine Grand Prairie hitters for the win.
Strawn was recognized twice during the regular season for his outstanding performances. When the month of July came to an end, Strawn was given the Pitcher of the Month award for his 4-0 month and 2.21 ERA. He also picked up Player of the Week honors for the week ending on August 24 when he threw the aforementioned shutout against Grand Prairie.
The Lemurs are now in Wichita for the divisional round of the American Association Playoffs. The Lemurs and the Wingnuts have won one game apiece in the best of the five game series. First pitch for the game on Saturday is 7:05pm at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
"I am so proud of what Jeremy accomplished over the summer," FAU Head Coach John McCormack said. "Winning Rookie of the Year is a great accomplishment. What a great start to his professional career!"
