BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Florida Atlantic University baseball team had the tying run just 180 feet away in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Owls fell to Louisiana Tech 3-2 Saturday in Boca Raton.
The Bulldogs (7-11, 2-3 C-USA) had a solid outing from their starting pitcher, Phil Maton, who pitched a complete game giving up just two runs and two walks.
FAU (13-7, 2-3 C-USA) managed just four hits in the loss.
LA Tech took a lead in the second as Stephen Gandy hit a lead-off double and was driven in on an RBI single by Ryan Jones.
The Bulldogs would score one run in each the eighth and ninth inning to go up by three with the Owls down to their last three outs.
Freshman Stephen Kerr singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Tyler Rocklein then hit a two-out, RBI double down the right field line to drive in Kerr, ending the potential of a shutout.
With two outs, junior Ricky Santiago reached on an error by the Bulldog shortstop, leaving runners at the corners. Another wild pitch would allow Rocklein to score and put the potential tying run on second base. However, a flyout by pinch hitter Esteban Puerta ended the rally as LA Tech took the win.
The rubber game of the series is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday at the FAU Baseball Stadium. For ticket information, visit FAUSports.com or call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
